According to itypeusa, the United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II as its head of state. It is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The UK is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea. The total area of the UK is approximately 243,610 square kilometers. The population of the UK is estimated at 66 million people. It has one of the oldest parliamentary systems in existence with a long history of democracy and freedom. London is its capital city. The United Kingdom has a diverse geography with low-lying areas in England and Scotland as well as mountainous regions in Wales and Scotland. It also has many rivers including the Thames, Severn and Clyde. The highest mountain in the UK is Ben Nevis which stands at 1,345 meters. The climate in the UK varies from temperate to mild depending on location but it can be quite unpredictable due to its location near the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf Stream influences. Rainfall is common throughout all seasons however winters are usually quite mild with temperatures rarely dropping below freezing point for extended periods of time. The United Kingdom (UK) is located in the Greenwich Mean Time Zone (GMT), which is UTC +0. This time zone is zero hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) and three hours behind the Near East Time Zone (NET). This means that when it’s noon in the UK, it’s 12:00 UTC. The UK follows Daylight Saving Time, so its clocks are adjusted forward one hour at the start of spring and back one hour at the start of autumn. This practice allows for more daylight in the evenings during summer months and helps conserve energy by reducing artificial lighting needs. In addition to GMT, certain parts of Scotland also observe a local time known as British Summer Time (BST). BST is one hour ahead of GMT, so when it’s noon in London it’s 13:00 in Edinburgh. BST was established by an Act of Parliament in 1916 to help conserve fuel during World War I, though it has since become a permanent fixture on the calendar due to its popularity with citizens. The UK has made efforts to standardize its timekeeping practices in order to promote better communication and economic development within the region. The government has encouraged businesses and individuals alike to use GMT as their primary source of timekeeping and has established regulations requiring all radio stations in the country broadcast using this standard time zone. These regulations have helped ensure that everyone in the UK is on the same page when it comes to telling time and coordinating activities across borders. I made my decision to go abroad early on, which is really the most important thing in the whole planning process, especially if you don’t want to go abroad through collaborations like Erasmus.
