The road forms a secondary north-south route avoiding major cities, passing east of Charlotte and west of Winston-Salem. The road is mostly parallel to US 52 which runs slightly to the east. The road is 210 kilometers long.

About 20 miles southeast of Monroe, US 601 in South Carolina enters the state of North Carolina from Columbia and runs 2×1 lanes to Monroe, a small town where it intersects US 74, the major 2×2 road from Charlotte to Wilmington. The road will then run in 2×1 lanes north, east of the city of Charlotte. At the town of Concord, the road is briefly double-numbered with US 29, after which US 601 merges with Interstate 85, the highway from Charlotte to Greensboro. This double numbering lasts 29 kilometers until Salisbury. Here US 601 turns north and intersects US 29 again, as well as US 70 which runs from Statesville to Greensboro. US 601 then heads north as a 1×2 trunk road and after 30 kilometers in Mocksville crosses US 64 leading to Lexington. Shortly afterwards it connects with Interstate 40, the highway from Asheville to Winston-Salem. US 601 then passes west of Winston-Salem and intersects US 421. after 25 kilometersat Yadkinsville. US 421 is the highway from Boone to Winston-Salem. Then US 601 continues as a 1×2 trunk road to Mount Airy in the north. Just before the end one crosses the Interstate 74, after which the US 601 ends at the US 52 from Winston-Salem.
History
US 601 was one of the original US Highways of 1926 but initially ran only in South Carolina. In 1932, the route was extended north to Mount Airy, North Carolina, creating today’s US 601 through North Carolina. However, shortly afterwards, in 1935, the southern part was scrapped, the route then only went from Salisbury to Mount Airy, a fairly short route through the middle of North Carolina. In 1951, US 601 was extended south again into South Carolina.
Between Concord and Salisbury US 601 rides on US 29. This was one of the first roads in the state to be extensively upgraded, even before the construction of I-85 on this corridor. Already in the 1950s, the entire double numbering already had 2×2 lanes. In 1965, a western bypass of Concord was commissioned, partly double-numbered with US 29, but also partly only with US 601.
In the 1970s, US 601 was routed over a more direct and newly constructed route south of Mount Airy. In 1979 US 601 was routed over a western bypass of Salisbury, but this road has not been developed to a very high standard. In the 1980s, a small section on the south side of Mount Airy was widened to 4 lanes, in connection with the construction of the bypass of US 52 (now I-74). In the period 2008-2009, the southernmost part of US 601 between Monroe and the South Carolina border was widened to a 2×2 divided highway.

US 701 is a US Highway in the US state of North Carolina. The road forms a secondary north-south route through the southeast of the state and has little through importance. The route only serves a number of smaller regional centers. The road is 185 kilometers long.

At Tabor City, US 701 in South Carolina enters the state of North Carolina from Conway, just west of the large wetlands. The road then continues for 35 miles to Whiteville, a small town where US 74 and US 76 intersect, which run double-numbered to Wilmington in the east. US 701 then runs 1×2 lanes north, passing Elizabethtown and arriving in the town of Clinton about 100 miles. Here one crosses US 421, the main road from Greensboro to Wilmington. About 30 kilometers north, at Newton Grove, one crosses Interstate 40, which comes from Raleighwalking to Wilmington. Shortly afterwards you cross the US 13, the main road from Fayetteville to Goldsboro. The US 701 then continues for another 30 kilometers, after which a connection with the Interstate 95 follows. After that, the road ends at US 301, which runs parallel to I-95.
History
US 701 was added to the network in 1932, and the route has not been modified in North Carolina since. US 701 serves only a secondary function in the state and does not serve any major or important places. The only upgrade was a Clinton diversion as part of US 421 in the 1950s. The US 701 lifts on that. In the 1950s, a diversion of Tabor City on the border with South Carolina was also realized.
