According to itypeusa, Latvia is a small, Baltic nation located in Northern Europe, covering an area of 64,589 km² and home to a population of 1.9 million people. The official language is Latvian, with Russian also being widely spoken. Latvia enjoys a temperate climate with temperatures ranging from -3°C (27°F) in winter to as high as 22°C (72°F) in summer. The majority of Latvia’s population are Lutherans, with other religions such as Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy also present in smaller numbers. The economy of Latvia relies heavily on its agricultural sector and tourism industry, accounting for nearly one-third of its GDP and more than half of its export revenues. Other industries such as manufacturing and services also contribute significantly to the country’s GDP. Latvia culture is deeply rooted in traditional customs such as music, dance and storytelling which have been passed down through generations for centuries. Music plays an important role in Latvia culture with traditional instruments such as accordions being used to create beautiful melodies that are still performed today at various festivals throughout the year. Art is also widely practiced throughout Latvia with many locals creating unique pieces depicting their culture and history for both local consumption as well as for sale to tourists from around the world. Latvia is located in the Baltic region and lies in the same time zone as the European region. Latvia is on Eastern European Standard Time (EEST), which is two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This means that when it is 12 pm UTC, it is 2 pm in Latvia. This time zone applies to all of the country, including Riga and Daugavpils. During Daylight Savings Time, EEST becomes Eastern European Daylight Time (EEDT), which is three hours ahead of UTC. In addition to this, some parts of Latvia also observe an unofficial time zone called Central European Standard Time (CEST). CEST is one hour ahead of UTC, while EEDT is two hours ahead of UTC. These unofficial time zones are observed by some businesses and government offices in certain parts of Latvia. For example, many banks will open at 1 pm CEST instead of 2 pm EEST during Daylight Savings Time. The use of these unofficial time zones can be confusing for visitors to the country who are not familiar with them. See ebizdir for Latvia Economical Facts.
