According to itypeusa, Jamaica is an island nation located in the Caribbean Sea. It is the third-largest island in the Greater Antilles, with a population of approximately 2.9 million people. The capital and largest city is Kingston, located on the south coast of Jamaica. The official language is English, although many Jamaicans also speak a dialect called Patois. The economy of Jamaica relies heavily on tourism, mining and agriculture with bauxite and alumina being major exports alongside coffee, sugar cane, bananas and other agricultural products. In recent years there has been a significant growth in the service industry due to its popularity as a tourist destination. Jamaica’s culture has been shaped by its history of colonization by various European powers as well as its proximity to other Caribbean nations. Music is particularly important with Reggae being the most popular genre which originated in Jamaica in the late 1960s and has since become popular worldwide. Other genres include Dancehall, Dub music and Ska which are all still very popular today. Food-wise there are many traditional dishes such as jerk chicken or pork which is marinated in spicy sauces or curries made from local ingredients like yams or plantain dishes such as Bammy or Ackee & Saltfish which are often served with rice & peas or boiled dumplings for breakfast or lunch. Traditional dances such as Kumina are still practiced today alongside sports like cricket and soccer which are both very popular on the island. Artisans continue to create beautiful works out of wood or clay often depicting animals or scenes from nature they see around them every day. Jamaica is located in the Northern Hemisphere, and lies in the same time zone as the Eastern Caribbean region. Jamaica is on Atlantic Standard Time (AST), which is four hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). This means that when it is 12 pm UTC, it is 8 am in Jamaica. This time zone applies to all of the island, including Kingston and Montego Bay. During Daylight Savings Time, AST becomes Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), which is three hours behind UTC. In addition to this, Jamaica also observes two unofficial time zones: Jamaica Standard Time (JST) and Jamaica Daylight Time (JDT). JST is five hours behind UTC, while JDT is four hours behind UTC. These unofficial time zones are observed by some businesses and government offices on the island. For example, many banks will open at 9 am JST instead of 8 am AST/EDT during Daylight Savings Time. The use of these unofficial time zones can be confusing for visitors to the island who are not familiar with them. See ebizdir for Jamaica Economical Facts.
