The education system is partly linked to what is in New Zealand. Schooling begins at 5 years and since 1992 is compulsory until the age of 14. Higher vocational education is limited and mainly focuses on teacher education. The National University of Samoa was established in 1988, and in Samoa is also a agricultural college for tropical agriculture.

Prime Minister Malielegaoi and his party won the election in March 2011. The party gained 55.6% of the vote.
In December 2011, the government moved Samoa west of the date line. The argument was that the country in its trade with Australia and New Zealand suffered a day offset.
In the March 2016 election, Prime Minister Malielegaois’s party HRPP passed another 6 seats up to 35. It received 57.3% of the vote.
Section 1 of the Constitution was amended in June 2017 to make Christianity a state religion.
