The education system is designed according to a British pattern. The school is compulsory and free of charge between the ages of 5 and 15 and consists of seven-year primary school and the first three-year part of the secondary school. More than 90% of children attend compulsory school and most of them complete it, but only a minor part continue in the final two-year part of secondary school. At higher levels there is a branch of the University of the West Indies, teacher colleges and technical schools.
