There is a 12-year compulsory schooling for children between 5 and 17 years. The primary school is 7 years old, the secondary school 5 + 2 years. There is a national college, as well as 7 international institutions that offer educational programs, especially in medicine.

Basseterre, the capital of the independent island state of Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean; 15,500 residents (2005). The city is located on St. Kitts. It was founded in 1727, but has been destroyed several times by hurricanes and wildfires.
