Gastritis affects about 50% of the world’s population. In Portugal, the numbers surprise even more: 50% of children, 8 years old, already have gastritis. Know the symptoms.
The gastritis is an inflammation of the walls of the stomach, caused by an infection or by erosion of its protective coating. This coating is very important because it produces substances essential for the digestive process. The inflammation caused by gastritis interferes with the production of these substances, allowing the acid produced by the stomach to penetrate and damage even more the walls.
Being an inflammation of short duration, it is called gastritis acute, when it is extended in time is called gastritis chronic and, if untreated, can last a lifetime.
SYMPTOMS OF GASTRITIS?
There are several factors that favour the emergence, development and maintenance of gastritis, but the diagnosis of the disease is, usually, performed through an endoscopy with biopsy. In some cases, it may also be necessary to perform blood tests, radiological investigations, studies of the stool or breath tests. Before these steps, it is necessary to be attentive to the symptoms of gastritis, including:
- Loss of appetite and feeling of satiety before the end of the meal
- Poor digestion and heartburn
- Bad to be and the feeling of stomach burning
- Feel that the food is not being digested
- Vomiting and nausea
- Pain in the abdomen
- Will burp
- Bleeding of the digestive tract – in the most critical situations, with evidence in the stool or vomiting
Important tip: to do the diagnostic test, it will be necessary to stop the medication for the gastritis during a period. In this phase, the pains return and, in many cases, are so unbearable that some people are dissuaded from taking the exam. To be able to support, take juice of raw potato for 15 minutes (natural and done on the outside) before breakfast. Try it out!
THE MAIN CAUSES OF GASTRITIS
THE BACTERIUM HELICOBACTER PYLORI
One of the main culprits for gastritis is the bacteria helicobacter pylori that is transmitted from person to person, through food or contaminated water. It is estimated that 50% of the world’s population is affected by the bacteria.
EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF MEDICINES
The excessive consumption of anti-inflammatory medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, it interferes with the production of the substance that contributes to the protection of the lining of the stomach.
With age, the protection of the stomach lining gets thinner and begins to lose its effect, as well as, also increases the susceptibility to infections and viruses that cause damage to the walls of the stomach.
STRESS AND ANXIETY
Situations excessive and prolonged pressure, stress, or anxiety contribute to the deterioration of the walls of the stomach.
CONSUMPTION OF EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL
The excessive consumption of alcohol harms the stomach lining, due to the increased production of the gastric juice to help digestion.
The carriers of the HIV virus, by deficiencies in the immune system, are more subject to the action of bacteria and other viruses.
Those who suffer from autoimmune diseases, crohn’s disease, or other infections caused by parasites, are more likely to contract and develop problems of gastritis
CONSUMPTION OF DRUGS
If you consume some type of drugs your biggest problem is definitely not gastritis, but still the consumption of some drugs increases the risk of getting gastritis.
TREATMENT OF GASTRITIS
- Through medication, medical indication, including: antacids, proton pump inhibitors or blockers of receptors of histamine.
- Focus diet based on lean meats, vegetables, and cooked fruit.
- Focus food alkaline or weak acid such as: spinach, watermelon, pumpkin, figs, potatoes, juices and vegetables, among many others.
