 Port Louis
Port Louis, the capital of the eastern state of Mauritius in the Indian
Ocean; 148,000 residents (2012). The city is characterized by its French and
British colonial past with, among other things, one of the world's oldest
racecourses, but also of the present as an exclusive tourist destination; The
waterfront is thus dominated by gaming casinos. Catholic and Anglican churches,
mosques and Hindu temples reflect the island's multi-ethnic population
composition.
The city was changed. 1736 by the French as a support point for the voyage
south of Africa. With the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869, it lost much of its
strategic importance, but it retained its function as the main port for the
colony's sugar exports. In the 1980's, several free zones were established, which
with foreign capital contributed to a diverse industrial development, and the
city's port has been expanded on several occasions since 1990.
