Officially, there is 7 years of compulsory schooling in
the Maldives. Traditionally, there are three different
school types: Quranic schools, Maldivian-language elementary
schools and English-language primary and secondary schools.
The primary school is 7-year (5 + 2), high school 5-year (3
+ 2). Only the English-language schools use the public
curricula. In 2000, 99% of children attended primary school.
The rate of illiteracy of the adult population is estimated
at 2.8%, one of the lowest rates in Southeast Asia (2003).
There are no universities, but several higher education
institutions.
