School and education in Lesotho

Primary education is free and is mainly run by three Christian missions (evangelical, Roman Catholic, Anglican) according to guidelines from the Ministry of Education. 7-year primary school is compulsory for children between 6 and 13 years. In 2000, 78% of the relevant school age began in primary school. The high school is 5 years (3 + 2 years). The National University of Lesotho in Rome, dating back to 1945, was established as a university in 1975. It has educated many of its neighboring leaders before it became possible to pursue higher education in their own homelands. Illiteracy is far less prevalent in Lesotho than in other African countries. According to UNESCO, 2003 was approx. 15% of the adult population is illiterate.
