School and education in Belize

The responsibility for education in Belize is shared between the state and the church, and most schools are run by the church with state support. It is compulsory 8-year primary school from the children is 6 years. Public schools are free, but parents have to pay for books and extras.

Almost 100% of children start primary school. The language of instruction is English, Spanish is the first foreign language. It creates problems because many of the children have Spanish or a Mayan language as their mother tongue.
